Quite often, the scope of coverage about climate change focuses solely on environmental changes. Truth is, the changes are just as detrimental to humans as they are to nature. For this week’s blog assignment, we were asked to address the health effects of climate change. Reading the American Journal of Public Health’s “Climate Change: The Public Health Response” offered insight into the topic. Two health affects that may influence the health of my family and friends would be “winter weather anomalies” and “increased ozone and pollen formation” because these changes could impede on our everyday lives. Slips and falls, as well as motor vehicle accidents, due to ice, snow, and rain affect any population group. And, increased pollination would increase allergy and asthma prevalence, which is something may people I know suffer from. Of the health effects on the list, the one that particularly surprised me was the increase in pollen production. The others are extreme weather changes and have been stressed before by many agencies, but I had yet to hear about the effect that climate change will have on allergies and asthma. Now that I think about it, it makes sense, but I had not previously considered it as a risk.
Primary prevention, attempting to lessen the change at hand, involves mitigation. In the case of climate change, the word includes efforts that have been made to reduce our GHG emissions and resource consumption. This will hopefully help prevent, or at least lessen, some effects that climate change will have on populations because the environmental changes will be reduced. Meanwhile, adaptation falls under the secondary and tertiary prevention efforts. It involves efforts to respond to and prepare for the health burdens associated with climate change. This is the response and treatment side rather than the preventative side, incorporating “public health preparedness”.
Public health professionals are an integral part of helping populations adapt to climate change. One specific example of providing a public health service related to the environmental and climate changes going on as a result of human impact would be working with media outlets to dispel any rumors or doubts about climate change, advertising possible effects, and suggesting behavior changes to both lessen environmental impact and health risks. This would be a part of both mitigation and adaptation techniques associated with “informing, educating, and empowering people about health issues.”
My hometown, Princeton, New Jersey, is home to a world-renowned university that is conducting research on climate change and its effect on the human population. Unfortunately, it does not disseminate into the town. I feel as though there is a general sentiment that the effects as so gradual – what does one or two degrees matter? – that they do not need to be addressed. Any small changes have potentially extreme results, while it may not be directly noticeable in my own town. Meanwhile, while Princeton is not necessarily preparing for climate change, they are prepared for emergency response, as should any town that runs smoothly. However, the underlying cause – climate change – still needs to be addressed so that its effects may be turned around. I could spectate a town hall meeting and work to get the issue on the council’s agenda or rally through more of a grass-roots advocacy approach. However, I remain pessimistic that the public will view climate change’s effect on health as a time-sensitive and urgent topic.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you in that mitigation and adaptation to climate change is not so much a matter of conducting university-level research. Instead, we should channel our efforts to mobilizing the media; this way, we can get the public to actually care about climate change. Like you have mentioned, most people find a change in a degree or two in temperature an unappetizing issue to be worried about, especially with bigger issues like economy and health care. However, this should not be the case. Like you have said, climate change is a time-sensitive and urgent topic, and i believe geting the media involved would be a great way to mobilize the public to the effects of climate change.

The fact that pollen made it on the list is an indication that there are several public health problems that the public doesn't know about, but they are still very important. Ginny- this was a great post! You definitely do a good job of summarizing the main points of the article and providing examples as well. I think it is interesting that you think mitigation and adaptation should be researched at a higher level than universities. I never really thought of that before, but definitely see where you are coming from. It is interesting to me that Princeton is doing such great research in your town, yet it doesn't affect your town at all. I think more advertisement of this research to the public would help alleviate this problem. Great job over all.

One important note I want to make is that secondary and tertiary preventions are still preventions--it's just prevention from delayed diagnosis (secondary) and prevention from significant complications/disease progression (tertiary) rather than prevention from the disease occuring in the first place (primary). I, too, am from a college town (Chapel Hill) and feel that some of the amazing knowledge that is generated at the university is not always translated or disseminated for public knowledge for the townsfolk. It would be pretty awesome if you could advocate for the issue by attending town hall meetings or rallies. Why are you pessimistic that people would realize this is a time-sensitive and urgent issue? Just curious...
Here are my thoughts on the assignment. Respiratory disease exacerbations from increased ozone and pollen formation and injuries/accidents from winter weather anomalies are two health effects of climate change that might affect my friends or family. Mental health effect is something I had not thought of before but is important to consider—especially since depression is the number one cause of DALYs (disability adjusted life years) lost. Mitigation is the process of slowing, stabilizing or reducing climate change and corresponds to primary prevention. Adaptation is the process of anticipating and preparing for the effects of climate change and corresponds to secondary and tertiary prevention (p.435 of the article). Public health professionals can help people adapt to climate change by informing them of health effects of climate change and providing them with up-to-date information. This corresponds to the “inform, educate and empower people about health issues” of the 10 essential public health services. It is important to perform this service because knowledge is power. When people know what threatens their health, they can do something to counter it. In my hometown of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, professors and researchers at UNC-CH are looking into ways to prepare for climate change. I would encourage my friends and family to purchase hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles to mitigate the process of climate change that occurs from CO2 emissions.
